May 5, 2010 – Video, ugh!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

I have spent the day going over hours and hours of video.  Just from January.  Trying to put something together for this crazy idea I had.  Seriously I don’t know how video editing people can do this.  But I push through it.  I”m trying to condense all these hours into digestible chunks.  So about 12 hours of video for Jan is now condensed into 5 minutes.  Cause… seriously, who wants to sit through all that?  (this?)  Anyway, a lot of quicks cuts, but I think it’s coming out nicely.   As a reminder, you’ll see some of the clips below and more…

April's happenings!

Oh Ladies & Gentlemen,
It has been a long time since we last spoke.  Hasn’t it?  It sure feels like it.  Things have been really busy on this side, and much in a good way, with a lot of playing and traveling.  Most recently I was up in New Jersey playing the Cape May Songwriters Festival which was simply amazing.   Before that it was just about two weeks prior that I was in Georgia. The  two weeks leading up to the New Jersey show were a killer.  It was nice to be out again.  Coming up these next few months I have  few shows here in the area:
  • APR 13thFULL BAND at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek for the Sunfest Shootout.  Yes, ladies & gentlemen, they are pitting friend against friend.  I have learned that the line up that night will be with several other bands with people with whom I am close with.  I say we all get up and do a rendition of “I’d like to buy the world a Coke.”
  • APR 16th – Relay for Life benefiting the Cancer Society.  This is in Richardson Park in Wilton Manors.  My first outside gig in warm weather this year!
  • APR 27th – Me and my friend Jeff Durham will be performing at Fat Cat’s.  He’ll play, then I’ll play, then he’ll play then hugs all around!
If you’re reading this and you’re not in town, well, then none of those places makes sense to you.  If you would like for this message so that when you read the places I’m going to play be familiar, send me over those names and I’ll see what I can do!
In the mean time, there is this voting thing.  Yeah yeah. voting blah!  But if you could head on over and give a vote for me that would be wonderful!  Here’s the link: http://wflx.cityvoter.com/alex-nelson/biz/536989
As usual, you guys are all awesome.  Every time I have the helicopter take me to the grocery store or the limo to take me down the property to my pool,  I think how wonderful you guys have made my life.
Seriously, thanks to all of you.  It’s hard, but you make it a ton of fun.  Hope to see you out at a show sometime!

I'm starting to think I was right…

So… It wasn’t too long ago that I was considering  killing my myspace account because well… there just isn’t any traffic there (at least that is useful to me) and it’s just another thing I have to update.  Then today, I’m seeing that perhaps I am right.  (Sorry Carmel, but I think it has to be done).  Today comes news that Owen Van Natta, Myspace’s CEO, is no longer with the company.  Whether he quit or was fired (rumored at the moment) it doesn’t matter.  When the guy at the top is moved out of the way then you have to question what is going on internally.  Plus, have you been to myspace lately?  I didn’t think so.

Just to clarify what I mean by useful traffic.  For me, as an independent musician/performer (whatever you want to call it) the number one thing on my priorities list in terms of this ‘career’ is my communication with my audience.  You guys are my ‘lifeblood’  because without you, I can’t do what I want to do.  So, as far as traffic that I consider useful, it’s that one-on-one dialog that I’m able to have with you.  I would say that over the past 3 months, I haven’t had any conversations with any fans (friends really, every time I get to know you guys that’s what I’m feeling).

So… myspace… time to go.  At least my profile.  Perhaps we should all send a message and do a mass exodus.  I’m down.  Let’s start deleting myspace profiles and help them out.  Starting Saturday I encourage all musicians/performers/comedians to follow…  let’s start the euthanization.

cheers,
Alex

Hey everyone,

I can’t believe this is only the third week of january. Right?  Things started off on the 2nd with the show at Luna Star, the Wallflower and then this past weekend with the 30A Songwriters Festival in Santa Rosa Beach.  It’s been a lot of fun.  There are a bunch of other shows coming up that I’m really excited about including one weekend that will have me in Washington DC on Friday and Saturday and then Georgia that Monday.

With all the the things that have been going on, I’ve wanted to figure out a way to include all of you in this mess and for you to see some of the behind the scenes of what goes on.  This is an idea a had a while back but just didn’t really know how to present it.  Really, I still don’t.  I put together a little trailer of what I think it’s going to be like and I’m calling it “Are we there yet?”  You can view the trailer here:  http://su.pr/1dlCuZ

The title doesn’t really mean much.  Most people always ask me what my aspirations are with this ‘music’ thing and it seems that everyone is referring to “making” it.  which just got me to thinking, “what does that mean?”  ”making” it?  Is making it being in a specific place where you can say that you’re successful?  I don’t know.  So the title is a play on that.  I’ll let the audience decide where we’re going and let me know when we arrive.

What I’ll do is try to keep you all in the loop as to everything that is going on.  Without any censoring (unless absolutely necessar).  Names and numbers will be bleeped out if any of that footage is used.  It will be more than just video however, I’ll also post more detailed blogs when I can.  I’ve already started some of that now with some notes on the recent festival I played.  Another reason for doing this is to also contribute to the music community.  Perhaps another musician will see what I’m doing and find it helpful to them.  Either way, I hope you are all in for the ride.

For the next few weeks I’ll be travelling.  This weekend and Next will be in central Florida (Winter Park, Deland, Orlando) then after that I’m off to DC and Atlanta.  There is some negotiation going on surrounding a festival in NJ and once I have more information on that I will let you all know.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who has been contributing to the “again” project.  It’s coming along nicely.  I think I’m just going to let it keep going and we’ll just keep editing that thing until everyone is in it.  Please be patient, I’ve got a back log of about 20 videos at the moment that I haven’t been able to get in there, but it will!

Thanks again for everything and I look forward to seeing you at a show!

yeah!

Oh and PS-  Know anyone that might like me or my music?  Please feel free to forward this along.
